Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who grew up in Delft. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, known primarily for Meisje met de Parel, a painting most will recognise when they see it. Vermeer worked slowly and with great care for his work, often using expensive pigments creating masterful lighting. Apart from his paintings of women, which were mostly set in the same two rooms of his house, he also made a series of views of the city he lived in. The one depicted on the back of this t-shirt is called Het Straatje (The Little Street) and shows a typical aspect of life during the 17th Century. Today, the house still stands, and the woman in the alleyway is even portrayed on the door that is now in front of it. This garment pays homage to both the artist and the Dutch architecture that still remains part of the street view of several cities in the Netherlands.
